About George Murphy

George Murphy is a Northern California based photographer who brings to the visual arts community over three decades of both traditional and digital photographic experience. It is a passion that has carried him up icy mountains, out to the launch pads of NASA's Kennedy Space Center and onto the studio sets of many Hollywood motion pictures.

His work behind a camera has been the creative foundation in a career that has crossed the bounds between still photography and motion pictures, journalistic reality and digital fantasy. For Murphy it is all about context and creating imagery that is true to the integrity of intended media.

Murphy's work in photography is paralleled by a career in motion-picture effects work that has earned him an Oscar and recognition as one of the leading digital effects artists in the industry. His feature film credits include Jurrasic Park, Forrest Gump, the Matrix Sequels, and Peter Jackson's King Kong, among others.

Drawing on his experience in both realms, Murphy is currently developing cross-media photographic opportunities under the FirstHand Pictures banner. This work aims to leverage the changing way in which we view and interact with the media around us. In support of this Murphy continues to pursue select editorial and commercial photography and story collaborations; in addition to his ongoing personal work on documentary and fine art photography projects.

Additionally, Murphy is actively working to expand the content available through this archive, drawing on both decades of past past works and significant new material that will soon find their way into the galleries available here.
